The Problem with Moving in the Summer with Kids
Families prefer to schedule their home move in the summer when the weather is nice, when they can easily take a few days off work and when the children are not at school. But while the latter of these things can make life a little easier for parents, it can turn the relocation into a traumatic experience for kids. That is because a summertime move will not only take the children outside of their current environment and circle of friends but it will also make it more difficult for them to make new friends. Hate it or love it, school pushes kids to be more social and communicative. Plus, it makes it easy for them to meet children their age. So, if you are planning to organise your house relocation this summer, you need to help your young ones make new friends in your new neighbourhood or town by:
- Enjoying some quality outdoor time
- Meeting other parents in the area
- Signing up your kids to a summer school or some training classes
- Hosting sleepover parties
- Letting them see their old friends as often as possible
Do that and you will make this change a lot easier to get used to for your children. Otherwise, it may have a negative effect on them which will be reflected in their behaviour, mood, school performance and even in their health.
Plan parent-children dates with the neighbours
Being a parent means that you need to take the initiative. Therefore, try to see if some of your new neighbours have kids at an age similar to that of your children. Befriend them and organise something like parent-children dates. In that way, both you and your kids will expand your social circle in no time.
Consider summer school
As it was already noted out, children are more likely to make new friends when they are at school. So, it may not be a bad idea to send them to a summer school or a summer camp. However, choose classes or activities that they will find interesting such as drawing, music, etc. It should not feel as a punishment.
Organise sleepovers
If you want your kid to become the star of the neighbourhood, be that parent that does not mind sleepovers. Naturally, that will make your evenings and weekends more stressful and exhausting. However, remember that you are doing this for your children and the opportunity to make them feel happier and more comfortable in your new home.
Spend more time outside
Sometimes kids do not need new friends. They just need to feel loved and nurtured to overcome stressful changes. Spending more quality time together as a family is an excellent way to show how much you care about them. It is best if you opt for outdoor activities such as sports, camping, travelling, etc. This will help them get their daily dose of Vitamin D and spend less time in front of the computer.
Make it easy for them to stay in touch with their old friends
While it will be very beneficial for your children to make new friends, it will be even better for them if they are not completely locked out of the lives of their old buddies. So, whenever you can, drive them to your old town or area where they can all catch up or invite their friends over when you have the chance.
If you are a student who is about to move out of their parents’ home for the first time to go to university, making new friends should also be on top of your priorities’ list. However, do not rely on mum and dad to help you out with that. Just use professional student removals in London so that you enough free time to go out and socialise.
